A Chronic Battle Which I Chronically WIN!

Despite being born a week past my due date, and coming out looking like I belonged to a family of sunburnt Japanese, I was a physically and mentally healthy baby. It wasn’t until the death of my grandmother when I was four that I started experiencing chronic illness.

Major depressive disorder was the first chronic illness I had to battle. After extensive testing for autistic disorders and ADHD, doctors decided that, although I was only four, I was clinically depressed. Back then, it was unheard of for a child to be depressed, so I didn’t really get a lot of help until I turned 13.

I beat the depression with the help of an absolutely amazing CBT specialist in October 2004, when I was 17. Although I had a fairly awesome childhood for a kid suffering from such an “adult” issue, I felt like my life had just begun when I was cleared.

Imagine my surprise when two years later, just as my social and working life is taking off, I’m laid up in bed wondering if I’m slowly dying. I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (myalgic encephalomyelitis) in October 2006. My fibromyalgia diagnosis came later, in October 2009, when I finally decided I needed to seek alternative medicine’s help!

As of October 2011 (it seems October is a significant month!), I have been relatively free of CFS/ME symptoms, but I’m still experiencing fibromyalgia symptoms. It’s a huge improvement on where I used to be though, so I can’t complain. I’m hoping that I’ll continue to recover throughout 2012… and hey, maybe in October I’ll be able to say I’m fully recovered!

Twitter Broke My Blog

I’m going to be honest. I really hate my blog. Both the quality and the quantity of my blog entries are lacking, and it’s pretty much the reason I’m forever deleting my databases and starting again. I always start fresh with all the best intentions, but all the plans for amazing blog entries go out the window as soon as I sit down to write.

I think part of the reason I’m so terrible at blogging is because I’m completely and utterly addicted to Twitter. Microblogging has ruined my ability to… macroblog! I tweet about so many different things during the day, any one of which would make excellent blog topics, but through Twitter, I’ve learnt to be concise with my opinions.

Most people would probably see this as a good thing, but not only is it killing my passion for blogging, it’s also making it difficult for me to meet word counts in my assignments for university. I used to go OVER word counts without waffling too much, but now I NEED waffle to just make word counts. It sucks.

So, I’m considering a bit of a challenge for myself… and possibly some of you, if you’re interested in joining it. I am going to stop using Twitter as a stream of consciousness-type deal and limit myself to a set number of tweets a day.

Instead, I’m going to write everything I would otherwise tweet into Evernote, then see what I can turn into a blog entry at the end of each day. I hope to do this for at least a month. I’m not sure what limit I should impose on myself, but I do want it to be less than 10 tweets per day (not including @ replies). What do you think is a good number?

EDIT: Considering limiting myself to 5 tweets per day, but giving myself free tweets after I’ve written a (decent) blog entry on that day. Good idea?

Wicket, Wicket GOOD!

Wicket
This is Wicket. He is a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel/Shih Tzu cross. Or a “King Shit”, as we call him.

He belongs to my parents and my sister, but I go home as often as possible to see him.

I can’t wait to have a dog of my own.

(No, his fur doesn’t look like that normally. It has been “styled”. Hehe. And yes, he is named after the Ewok.)
